EPISODE SUMMARY:
Everyone has that one band that means more to them than any other. But who fills that hole for those musicians themselves? Well, there’s a good chance that your favorite band’s favorite band is the highly influential power pop group Big Star. Most of the other artists who have multiple albums on the 500 list are well known and beloved the world over. But despite the fact that they are widely considered to be one of the most important groups in rock history, these sons of Memphis, Tennessee remain in relative obscurity. Still, their unique songwriting abilities, troubled backstory and the emotionally transcendent nature of their work on their third and final studio album, 1978’s Third/Sister Lovers, is precisely what has drawn such devotion from fans like comedian Chris Garcia. Chris is no stranger to wearing his heart on his sleeve, as is evident from his half hour special on Comedy Central, his album Laughing and Crying at the Same Time, and his WNYC Studios-sponsored podcast Scattered.
