EPISODE SUMMARY:

The United States has a lot to contend with in terms of its legacy, and its relationship with music is certainly not the least of skeletons in its closet. Many of the bands we know and love today owe an incredible debt of more than just gratitude to the African American artists who birthed jazz, soul and blues and gave this country cultural cornerstones to build upon. While John Lee Hooker may not be a household name in 2021, his life's work is rightly respected around the world, and there's no better way to get a crash course in it than by listening to the 1991 compilation album The Ultimate Collection: 1948-1990. That way you'll be at least somewhat caught up to comedian and actor Tommy Davidson. The star of In Living Color, Booty Call and Bamboozled is well versed in the impact of Black music and its importance in our society.
