EPISODE SUMMARY:
The traditional path to success, glory and acclaim may seem like the best path for most people with creative ambition. But if you've always identified as an outsider who cannot shape yourself to fit the expected mold, how do you proceed? Well, one clear example is that of hardcore punkers Black Flag, who couldn't find mainstream appeal, let alone representation, production or distribution of their work. What they did instead was make the music they wanted to hear, play in venues they felt welcome in, and release devastatingly brutal and intense albums like 1981's Damaged. In many ways, comedian, actor and writer Michael Ian Black, followed in their footsteps, creating his surreal and unconventional art through shows like The State, Stella and the movie Wet Hot American Summer.
